Modules

In the Master’s Program in Economics we distinguish between two types of modules:

  • Compulsory Modules (CM) must be taken without exception.
  • Optional Modules (OM) can be chosen from a number of alternatives.

Each module is completed either with a single module-examination or a specified number of sub-module exams. The modules in the curriculum consist of abstract courses. The attribution of the concrete courses can be obtained from the university calendar and from LSF.

You can find more detailed information in the curriculum of the Master's program (PDF, 15 kB) and in the description of the individual modules (PDF, 36 kB).

The curriculum of the Master’s Programme in Economics is structured as follows:

1st Semester

In the first semester, Master’s students take the two Compulsory Modules, “Mathematics for Economists” (CM1) and “Econometrics” (CM2).

In addition, they choose one of the two compulsory Optional Modules, “Foundations of Applied Economics” (OM1) or “Foundations of Economic Research” (OM2)

2nd and 3rd Semesters

In the second and third semesters 45 ECTS points are to be obtained by choosing three out of the following Optional Modules (OM 3-9), each of them comprising 15 ECTS. Please note: OM 7 is obligatory for students with OM 2 (Research Track). Students with OM 1 (Applied Track) can not choose OM 7. Only one of the two modules OM 8 and OM 9 can be chosen.

  • Economic Theory (OM3)
  • Applied Economic Analysis and Empirical Economics (OM4)
  • Public Economics (OM5)
  • Economic Research (OM6)
  • Economic Research & Public Economics (OM7)
  • General Managerial Economics (OM8)
  • Interdisciplinary Subject (OM9)

In addition, students in the third semester will attend an advanced seminar (CM3) in one of their previously taken fields of study. In this seminar, the student will work on an independently formulated research problem. The results will be presented in a seminar paper. The requirement for admission to the Advanced Seminar is the attainment of at least 42 ECTS-credits.

4th Semester

The Master’s thesis will be written in the 4th semester. This should be an independently written, scientific work in a specific field of economics. The Master’s thesis has to be completed over a period of 22 weeks.
