Questions regarding the application

Here you can find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions regarding the application process. If you can't find the answer you were looking for, please send an email with your question to mgse-master@econ.lmu.de.

When is the application deadline?

The online application is open from April 1st up to and including April 30th of each year.

What is the difference between the Master in Quantitative Economics and the Master in Economics offered at LMU?

The master's program in Quantitative Economics (MQE) offers research oriented training that prepares students for research focused positions as professional economists or in top Ph.D. programs. Students specialize early in two fields out of Microeonomics, Macroeconomics, Public Economics and Econometrics.

The master's program in Economics (MSc Economics) provides students with analytical and logical problem-solving skills, deepens their knowledge of economics and brings them to the frontiers of current research. Master students are trained for a demanding international professional career.
To sum up, the MQE is the right program for you if you are looking for a quantitatively very challenging program preparing you for an advanced research career. If you are looking for an excellent preparation for an international career as an applied economist, the MSc Economics is right for you.

Can I apply for both master's programs?

First of all, it is important that you carefully deliberate what kind of program you are looking for.

While the master's program in Quantitative Economics (MQE) is the right program for you if you look for a quantitatively very challenging program preparing you for an advanced research career,
the master's program in Economics (MSc Economics) is right for you if you are looking for an excellent preparation for an international career as an applied economist.
Hence, the two programs are NOT substitutes but have very different requirements and will exhibit very different modes of instruction.

You will know about the decision on your suitability for the MQE early enough to decide whether it makes sense for you to apply for the MSc Economics.

We STRONGLY DISCOURAGE a double degree in both courses of studies. The compulsory modules of both programs differ fundamentally; reciprocal credit transfers are not possible. As the structure in the electives is different in both programs, too, reciprocal credit transfers will not work for the electives, either.

Does my bachelor’s degree certificate need to be apostilled?

For the application at our department it is not necessary to provide apostilled documents.

Must I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics in order to be admitted into the master’s program?

A Bachelor’s Degree in Economics is not an absolute requirement, but at the same time you must be able to demonstrate knowledge of economics that corresponds to that of the Bachelor’s in Economics in our department. In all cases, very good knowledge of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Empirical Economics, and Public Economics is required. Whether your qualification can be recognised as equivalent to our Bachelor’s in Economics in terms of content and methods also depends on the courses you have attended and the areas of specialization. This can only be checked after the application deadline. A statement of suitability cannot be given before this date.

Can I apply without having completed my bachelor’s studies?

Applying before the completion of your bachelor’s program is possible as soon as you have completed at least 75% of your bachelor’s program. (In a 180 ECTS program this would mean you have obtained at least 135 ECTS). In this case, make sure your online application is accompanied by an official transcript of the grades achieved to date, along with a weighted average grade. In case of admission you will receive an acceptance offer conditional on your final grade. The admission is finally completed as soon as you have submitted your Bachelor’s qualification certificate.

How can I convert my grades to the German grading system?

The calculation of equivalent grades will be carried out on the basis of the modified Bavarian Formula (PDF). Please note that grades are rounded to the second place after the decimal point.

When and where does the admission test take place?

The test of admission for entry in winter semester always takes place a couple of weeks after the application deadline. The exact date will be announced on our website at the start of the application period. If you have to take part in this test, you will receive an invitation by email about two weeks before the test date.

Please note: The test only takes place in Munich, there are no exceptions possible!

Is there any financial support for international students?

We are unfortunately unable to offer scholarships due to regulatory and budgetary reasons. For scholarships we recommend you address e.g. DAAD. Please note that we can't issue recommendations for scholarships for candidates unknown to us. In addition, we can't issue any sort of confirmation that you are eligible for the program in advance of the regular application procedure, also not for an application for a scholarship.

For financial support other than scholarships, master’s students have the opportunity to work as student research or teaching assistants. If you are interested in a position, you may address our Graduate Office after the results of your first exam are available (December in your first year of studies).

Further information can be found here: https://www.en.uni-muenchen.de/students/int_student_guide/before_you_arrive/budgeting/index.html

Yes! All international applicants must apply separately to both. They must apply via the online tool for the Department of Economics, and again at the International Office via their additional application procedure.

Can I apply now for a place in the program this year if I want to begin studying the next year?

A positive certificate of suitability is valid so long as the program is not subject to fundamental revisions. As revisions due to changes in legal regulations may arise in the year after admission, we recommend you apply for the year in which you want to begin your studies.

In case you did receive a positive certificate in the past and want to start later, please contact the Graduate Office as soon as possible!

How can I get your University's TOEFL or IELTS code?

We do not provide you with the University's TOEFL or IELTS code, and instead require that you upload a scanned document (maximum size: 5 MB) with the results to your online application. If a delayed delivery of the test result was requested, it has to be sent via email to master@econ.lmu.de.

I would like to study Economics as a minor (Nebenfach) – is the application procedure the same?

Students who want to study Economics as a minor subject don't have to apply. For the minor subject Economics there is no entry restriction and therefore, you do not need a admission letter from our department. Whether you can choose Economics as a minor is determined by the regulations of your main subject (major); if you have questions regarding this, please contact the study advisors in your major subject.

How long does the application review process take?

We try our best to process your application as quickly as possible. For applicants who must take part in the test of admission, we estimate approximately two weeks from after the test until you receive a decision. Please note that we can give no information on the status of your application until the entire process is completed.

If you are not able to provide your TOEFL/IELTS score at the time of application you may upload a formal petition instead, which says that you are going to hand in your result after the application deadline via email.
